How Uber Gets Its Money

Jan 31, 2024 By Susan Kelly

Uber Technologies Inc. uses its extensive network and cutting-edge technologies to move people and commodities around. Ride-hailing services, food, grocery delivery, and freight shipments are provided through the company's mobility, delivery, and freight businesses. By connecting those in need of these services with the people and businesses that can supply them, the Uber platform helps everyone win.

As a worldwide transportation and delivery service, Uber operates in the U.S. and Canada logistics markets. Competitors in the transportation sector include Lyft Inc. and Didi Global Inc., located in China. DoorDash Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. are two other delivery service competitors for Uber. C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc. and XPO Logistics Inc. are the freight brokers it competes with.

Finances of Uber

Q4 of the 2021 fiscal year, which concluded Dec. 31, 2021, was disclosed in early February by Uber. The company's net income was $968 million reported in the same period last year, compared to a loss of $892 million. The total revenue increased by 82.6% to $5.8 billion in the year under review.

The COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020 and impacted Uber's ride-hailing business. However, the company's delivery business flourished as more customers stayed home and ordered food online. Due to vaccination rollouts and economic recovery, some of the rides company's losses could be mitigated by this success.

Uber's Sectors of Business

The following are Uber's three operational and reportable segments: This includes 1) Mobility, which includes its ride-hailing company (previously known as Rides), and 2) Delivery (formerly known as Eats), which provides a meal delivery service; and 3) Freight. 1 Uber gives a breakdown of each segment's revenue and adjusted EBITDA.

Revenue and adjusted EBITDA were not generated in Q4 FY 2021 for this category. The "Corporate G&A and Platform R&D" category, which had an adjusted EBITDA loss of $489 million, also includes expenditures not attributable to the company's reportable businesses.

Mobility

Uber's Mobility division is its most important business unit as a leading ride-sharing service. Cars, auto-rickshaws, motorbikes, minibusses, and taxis are some of the vehicles that may be used to offer trips for customers. Financial relationships and transportation offerings are also included in this area. In Q4 FY 2021, the Mobility division produced $2.3 billion in sales, an increase of 54.9 percent over the same period last year.

Uber's revenue for the third quarter was boosted by 39% by this source. A rise of 96.2% year-over-year in adjusted EBITDA was reported for the division, coming in at $575 million. Across all reportable segments, it accounted for roughly 96% of the adjusted EBITDA. 4

Delivery It is possible to search for and find nearby restaurants, order meals, and either pick up the meal at the restaurant or have it delivered through Uber's Delivery section. Groceries and other chosen commodities are also available for delivery in several countries.

Freight

Uber Freight is a service that links shippers and carriers through a single platform. Additionally, it allows shipping companies to reserve cargo at a price that is both upfront and transparent. Also included in this category are transportation management and other logistical services.

In the fourth quarter of FY 2021, the Freight division earned $1.1 billion in sales, an increase of 245.0 percent over the same period last year. It contributed to over a fifth of the company's total revenue. In Q4 FY 2021, the segment's adjusted EBITDA deficit shrank from $41 million to $25 million.

Recent Developments

It was revealed on March 12, 2022, that starting on March 16th, Uber would begin charging its drivers and couriers for the growing cost of gasoline. Depending on where you live in the United States, the Uber premium for a ride will be either $0.45 or $0.55, and for an Uber, it will be either $0.35 or $0.45. All of the additional fees will be paid by the company's employees.

At least 60 days were given for the firm to perform an evaluation, following which the surcharge would be lifted. Uber announced on January 27th, 2022, that it had achieved a deal with the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW), Canada's most prominent services sector union.
